Privacy Policy

BackNine is developed and operated by Ripcord Media and Development, LLC.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information:
- Account data: name, email address, and profile information you provide when creating an account.
- Usage data: rounds played, scores, handicap data, league activity, social posts, and interactions within the App.
- Device information: device type, operating system version, and unique device identifiers.
- Location data: GPS coordinates collected during active rounds (see Section 2).
2. Location Data
BackNine uses your device's GPS to provide real-time distance information on golf courses. Location data is collected only while the App is actively in use during a round. GPS coordinates are processed on-device and in real time to calculate distances; they are never stored or transmitted to our servers. When the round ends (or location access is revoked), all location data is discarded. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings, though this will limit GPS functionality.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide, operate, and improve the App and its features
- Calculate handicaps, statistics, and league standings
- Power social features including feeds, reactions, and league boards
- Deliver AI-powered coaching recommendations via Anthropic's Claude API
- Send push notifications and in-app alerts relevant to your activity
- Analyze usage trends to improve product performance (via Google Analytics 4)
- Process subscription payments and manage billing
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share data in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers: third-party vendors who help us operate the App (listed in Section 5).
- League commissioners: commissioners can see member activity within their league. This is limited to league-related data only.
- Legal requirements: if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or the public.
5. Third-Party Services
BackNine uses the following third-party services, each with their own privacy practices:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage (Privacy Policy)
- RevenueCat — subscription management and in-app purchase processing for iOS and Android (Privacy Policy)
- Google Play Billing — in-app subscription purchases on Android, processed via RevenueCat (Privacy Policy)
- Apple App Store / StoreKit — in-app subscription purchases on iOS, processed via RevenueCat (Privacy Policy)
- Stripe — payment processing for Pro subscriptions purchased on the web (Privacy Policy)
- Anthropic — AI provider powering the AI Caddy coaching feature (Privacy Policy)
- Google Analytics 4 — app usage analytics and performance monitoring (Privacy Policy)
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or compliance purposes (such as billing records, which may be retained for up to 7 years).
7. How to Delete Your Account and Data
You can delete your account and all associated data directly within the App at any time, or by submitting a request at playtheback.com/delete-data:
- Open the BackNine app
- Go to Settings
- Tap Account
- Tap Delete Account
This action is permanent and will remove your profile, round history, league data, and social posts. If you have an active Pro subscription, cancel it before deleting your account to avoid future charges. You may also request deletion by emailing contact@playtheback.com.
8. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, secure authentication, and access controls. In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you via email within 72 hours of becoming aware of the incident, to the extent required by applicable law.
9. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction: request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data
- Deletion: request deletion of your account and data (see Section 7)
- Portability: request an export of your data in a portable format
- Opt-out: unsubscribe from marketing communications at any time

10. Children's Privacy
BackNine is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it immediately. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us at contact@playtheback.com.
11. Data Transfers
BackNine is operated in the United States. If you are accessing the App from outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. By using the App, you consent to this transfer.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the “Last updated” date. For material changes, we will provide notice via email or an in-app notification. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
